People Portal Full Body Scanner

The scanner consists of two, diametrically opposed, rotating vertical arrays. Each array contains four hundred thirty-two microwave dielectrometers. The operating parameters are specially designed to isolate an appropriate volume of physiological material from a human body standing in the center of the rotating arrays. The output signals of the dielectrometers are sent to a computer that has been programmed to compare them with pre- acquired signals from human beings of like height and weight to that of the instant subject. The computer takes no action as long as the instant information compares favorably with that stored in the computer. The definition of 'favorable' is operator selectable as the systems sensitivity adjustment. If, during the scanning process, the computer detects an unfavorable comparison it red flags the offending location upon a generic wire-frame figure. Locating the target for the operator virtually eliminates any need for pat-down or strip-searches as well as making it unnecessary to hand wand the entire subject. This saves both time and embarrassment.

Unlike competing technologies, no picture of an individual’s actual anatomy is ever produced, seen or exhibited. The operator sees only a wire-frame image indicating by red arrows the exact location of the anomalies.

 

 There are 81 categories of human physiological baseline data. The nine height and nine weight ranges correlate with Body Mass Index (BMI) and provide the references against which all incoming data is compared. Any received information outside these physiological norms is declared a target. In this regard the system is unique in that the shape of an object is unimportant. A material's density and absorption abilities are the criteria for making the decision to declare a material 'offensive'. The inability to recognize and display shape provides this technique with its non-intrusive attributes.

Product Performance

The PPII two-array security portal will achieve better than 95% physiological detection rates.

It is capable of contrasting metals, plastics (including explosives), liquids, ceramics and many powders when a false alarm rate of 15% is set as the sensitivity. To date, there has been found no repeatable location on a human body that will always go undetected by the PPII.

The device is capable of passing a minimum of 15 passengers per minute depending upon target alarms and how they are handled.

Clothing, even moderately wet, does not affect the system. Small items such as key rings, wallets, small belt buckles, metal zippers, etc. will not cause the unit to alarm, unless sensitivity is set high enough to contrast them. Moderate motion during the scanning process is accounted for in the baseline data.
