Airport and airline security depends on the authentication of ID and travel documents. In many countries, immigration authorities hold airlines responsible for transporting inadmissible passengers. Airlines can avoid fines by detecting fraudulent IDs before flights and by creating a record of all passenger IDs, thwarting asylum seekers who destroy or switch their IDs during flights. In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration has been authorized to improve security at domestic airports, including advancements in passenger screening. Additionally, the U.S. government requires airlines to provide more information about passengers from other countries, including compliance with the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS).
